Frequently asked questions

Q: I am graduated recently, and not enrolled in a University anymore. Can I participate in the challenge?

A: University students who graduated after 1 September 2014 are considered as recent graduates, and are welcome to join the challenge.

Q: Can PhD candidates participate in a team, and what are the constraints?

A: PhD candidates are welcome to join the contest, as long as the majority of the team they participate in consist of BSc./MSc. students.

Q: I am from Asia and I study in Europe, which continent do I belong to in terms of this contest?

A: The location of a student's current academic activity is of interest in this contest, not the nationality. For example, a Japanese student studying at a University in Germany takes part in this contest as a European team member.

Q: Which continent do Russia and Turkey belong to in the frame of this contest?

A: For this contest, both Russia and Turkey are considered Asia.

Q: Which orbit should we assume for the crew habitat?

A: The EML2 scenario is the most likely initial build-up location of the habitat.

  • EML2 is easier to reach on a fast transfer (lower delta-v)
  • EML2 provides line of sight to the far side while potentially avoiding occultations by the Moon (comes at a small delta-v cost)
  • Transfers to other solar system destinations are easier to reach (lower delta-v)

Any contribution with a EML1 scenario would look very different and has thus substantially less value.
